backcountry skiing with the foothill freak

Fairy Meadows Cabin, North Selkirks, 2006

Selkirks North

It took me a few days to realize that the gnary terrain featured on the cover of this book at the cabin was indeed one of the areas that we had been skiing.

Fairy Meadow Cabin

Our fabled abode at the foot of the glaciers as illustrated by Jeff. This is exactly how it looked after we picked up all the beer cans!

Day 1

The fly in and familiarize day.

Bruno

(at breakfast before the flight in) "Do you have ski crampons? This is a good trip for ski crampons. If you can, buy them now; quickly!"

at the airport

We discovered an excellent way to pass the time while waiting for the Helicopter to shuttle us and the gear...

Fairy Meadows cabin

After being brutalized by carrying all our gear and food up the 92 steep and icey stairs (but who's counting?) from the heli pad to the cabin, we actually had enough energy for a short tour. Up, underneath the Houdini Needles we practiced beacon searching, beacon finding, and most challenging of all, we tried remembering everyone's name in our stunningly large group of 18.

Here's a good shot of the cabin in all it's splendor, as well as Matthias, and my skis off to the right. I love my skis!
