Our third day we decided to return to Pikers Peak via the south
climb to see some slopes to the north of the South West Chute that
drop down to the Avalanche Glacier. It looked like a great line
to avoid the crowds, do some exploring, yet to still stay off of
the heavily crevassed areas.
Not a bad place to wake up. Our cozy camp featured two foot tall
lava rock wind blocking walls and a nearby spring.
At this point of the climb the peak seems most daunting to me as
it looms in the distance. However, the mile long, low angle snowfield
allows for some very quick skinning.
Skinning up the South Climb on Mount Adams.
Stompin sun cups, waking up walking. Mount hood just on the edge
of the photo, left.
Foothill on top of Pikers Peak (Mount Adams false summit, where
many of the classic ski lines start) Mount St. Helens smoulders
in the distance.
Fu gearing up for the steep section.
The huge upper bowl rolls over into multiple, steep chutelets.
The Princess scouts the next drop.
And lines up to drop through the last pinch onto the finishing apron.
The Pinnacle (north west summit of Adams) towers above our run, Fu.
The Pain! 750 ft to go.
Finally nearing the bottom of the run and the terminus of Avalanche
Glacier.
Looking back on our run, satisified with the
paths we created down the mountain.
Ahhhh, yes. The beauties of skiing volcanos.
